NATIONAL PARK ALPINE HIKE Backpack in the park renown for its tundra hiking and breathtaking up-close views of Mt. Mckinley. A profusion of flowers color the tundra in contrast to the panorama of massive glaciers, granite spires and the perpetually snow covered summit of Mt. McKinley. Enjoy this splendid mountain scenery while backpacking in this spectacular corner of Denali National Park. Some days we will hike with a pack on and set up a new camp. Other days will be for day hiking, climbing to passes or summits and scanning the horizon for moose or bear. We will start and finish the trip with a bush flight that traverses the lowlands south of Mt. McKinley, landing on a gravel strip established by gold miners. (

- DENALI WILDERNESS HIKE Treat yourself to a week of hiking in the off-trail wilderness you can experience only in Alaska. Fly in from the village of Talkeetna and land on a pristine lake, just a short walk away from fabulous views of Mt. McKinley (20,320 ft.). This is a land where caribou shed their antlers and bear graze on berries. Hike across the tiny tundra vegetation that remarkably nurtures these animals and creates the best of off-trail hiking. For the return trip we will flag down the small, local train and ride the Alaska Railroad back to Talkeetna. (

TUNDRA HIKE Can you
fit in at least a little time for a hike during your busy Alaska trip
? This short amount of time in the backcountry will give you an impression
of Alaska that will stay with you forever. An hour after leaving the road
and gaining only a few hundred feet, magnificent views of Mt. McKinley
open up before us. The vast expanse of open country to the east, so critical
to the survival of the grizzly and caribou, with the contrasting dramatic
uplift of Mt. McKinley to the west, gives you a sense of wilderness felt
in few places on earth. In order to eliminate any weather delays with
bush flights, we will be dropped off by van and return to Talkeetna via
a remote section of the Alaska Railroad. (

CLASSIC BACKPACK TRIP Tracing the age old routes of the migrating caribou we will hike on the trails made by these magnificent animals. We will land with a float plane on a remote lake and instantly be immersed in the true meaning of wilderness. The vastness of the landscape and the tracks left from centuries of caribou moving from their calving grounds to summer feed, establishes a new sense of wildness. We will constantly be on the look-out for the moose, bear and sheep that are also travelling through this land. The opportunity to spend a week on the tundra observing this natural habitat is a fantastic experience. (

TO MOONSHADOW TREK A unique world awaits those who choose to backpack in Alaska's alpine tundra. We will land on Sheepback Lake, its turquoise waters framed by jagged rocky peaks and magnificent panoramic views of the vast alpine tundra stretching out to meet the ice and snow of the Alaska Range. We will have one day to do a hike without packs and then head out by map and compass toward Moonshadow Lake. Grizzly and black bear, Dall sheep and the elegant caribou all thrive in this diverse environment. Scanning with binoculars we usually have a chance to watch these animals travelling across this northern land they know as home.

RANGE ARCTIC HIKE Little has changed in this arctic landscape known as the Brooks Range since ancient man wandered foraging and hunting caribou there thousands of years ago. Stone tools found laying in the tundra attest to this ancient culture. Today, it is the nearly half million caribou that draws a few hardy souls to the far north every summer in the hopes of being able to witness one of the greatest animal migrations in the world. We will be flying from Kotzebue in a bush plane to a lake nestled in a remote corner of this vast country. The twenty-four hours of daylight encourages an unbelievable spurt of growth from the wild flowers that cover the tundra and a frenzy of feeding from all the migratory birds that nest in this fragile ecosystem. The combined effect of the ancient man sites, the caribou and bear, the birds and magnificent wide open landscape in flower is a trip of a lifetime.
